Orchardist Phillip Ritz was one of the first to prove the richness of this valley for growing trees, fruit and vegetables. Come hear Phillip Ritz tell the story of establishing his nursery of over 100, 000 trees and shrubs near where the Walla Walla country Club is today. He'll also relate how he worked tirelessly to promote the 2nd Transcontinental Railroad across the U.S. -- even writing personal letters to every member of the US Congress. He spent a lot of time on horseback investigating railroad routes and developed close friendly relationships with members of the tribes at a time when tensions were high and friction frequent between whites and natives. Phillip Ritz will share what an innovative horticulturist he was, experimenting with growing sweet potatoes and Chinese sugar cane. He was a mill owner and in 1868 shipped fifty barrels of flour all the way to New York!

Perhaps you are wondering if Ritzville Washington was named after Phillip Ritz or if he ever lived in Queen Anne confection Ritz mansion, that still stands on the grounds of his former land? Attend Living History at 2 p. m. on Sunday April 28 and you will find out! Portrayed by Ron Klicker
