The summer of 1968 was the beginning of a love affair with Olympic mountains and waters; I began my dissertation on glacial geomorphology and Pleistocene geologic history. What was the relationship between radiating Olympic valley and piedmont glaciers and the Puget Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet? Looking for Little Ice Age moraines was an excuse to climb Mt. Olympus, Mt. Cruiser, The Brothers, and other peaks; failures to summit Mt. Pershing and Mt. Constance led to second attempts. Purposes of the geologic mapping included geologic hazards such as landslides and suitability for waste disposal. The 1973 discovery of the first-known active fault in Washington increased the scope of investigations. As the decades went by, colleagues in the Washington Geologic Survey continued the research on both sides of Hood Canal, including finding a fault along the Olympic-Wallowa lineament.
